There are a common list of things that every cyclist dreads, from real dangers, to incredible annoyances, like having one’s bike stolen. Indoor storage is a great way to prevent this, but finding the space can often be difficult, especially for business and public spaces. Fortunately for the tenants of the Spalding Building in Portland, this is no longer a problem.

The historic building has had two of it’s three vaults converted into bicycle storage facilities for it’s guests. The security is real beyond just the impressive, but non-functioning, doors, as both vaults are monitored via video camera as well, and users have access to lockers for personal belongings as well. What a great way to keep a historic element of the buildings, as well as invest in cycling infrastructure.

Check out the rest of the details, and more photos, at Bike Portland »

The days have shortened. The weather has turned foul most days of the week. The temperatures are slowly, but steadily, dropping. And we cannot wait to get out into it on our bicycles. The time has come for another tweed ride!

This season’s tweed ride will be a bit shorter than the spring one, or the seersucker ride this summer, to accommodate the studio open house we are planning on having afterwards.

Route details are still being ironed out, but we would love to hear suggestions! We want to keep things slow paced and enjoyable, and as flat as possible. We will be beginning and ending at our studio (located in Doughboy Square near Bike-PGH) to make it easier to hang around afterwards, for those who chose to. There will be food and beer provided, we certainly don’t want to send anyone home from a ride famished!

More to come as we narrow it down! Leave comments if you have suggestions!

We are pleased to announce our second leisurely, themed ride to be held in the glorious city of Pittsburgh. In following with the relaxed style of the Tweed Ride earlier this spring, but with apparel adjustments more in tune with a hot August afternoon, we present the Second Sunday Seersucker Saunter Spectacular.

The ride will be just short of 10 miles, and shall prevail at a slow enough pace so as to never break into a full sweat. The saunter will start in Schenley Park, at the top of the upper field near the turn around in Overlook Drive, and progress through the Park, Southside, Downtown and a brief stint in the Northside before retiring to the courtyard of the Priory Hotel, where light refreshments will be served. The entire experience will begin at 9:30 AM on Sunday the 8th of August, 2010, which coincides quite nicely with Bike-PGH‘s BikeFest celebration. There is a Facebook Event that you can join, if you would like as well.

Additionally, we have secured some bells from Velo-Orange which we will sell for only $5 at the beginning of the route. Drew and I will be there as early as 8:45-9 AM, so feel free to pick up some additional swag for your bike to help you alert those along the route!

Please joins us in our joy of riding and appreciating the bicycle’s heritage on the 8th. Whether head-to-toe garb, or simply in the mindset to enjoy a relaxed ride with good company, it should be a great time. Feel free to download either the Poster or Map by click on the image to retrieve a PDF format file.

It has come to our attention that certain materials, textual and photographic in nature, have been circulating the internet in an attempt to disclose corporate secrets of ClankWorks. While we at Clank seek to be innovative with our products, our image and business plan are best suited to an impenetrable shroud of secrecy concerning future endeavors. To clear the confusion, you may see one example of the compromising materials below. This photo is included to show you exactly what you should not be paying attention to, so please disregard and forget about it immediately.

Rumors that this prototype was discovered attached to a bicycle outside of a beer garden in the bay area are clearly exaggerated, as we are based in Pittsburgh and there is no way that could happen. However, any staff member that may have been responsible will be dealt with swiftly.

While we will still refute that such a product exists, if it were to be released, it would be some time this summer, would perhaps be at a price-point of $79, and would be exclusive to AT&T, with the possibility of a Verizon model.

Please direct any future questions regarding such products to the comment system, or the contact page, so our public relations department can better assist you.

Not a new idea, or one that we haven’t seen made several times before, but there is something rather simple with this floating cycle.

Li Jin stays high and dry with her Amphibious Bicycle.

Four sets of floats, made from standard office water cooler style bottles, keep the bike high and dry. Additionally, it looks as though they can be added and removed rather easily, making it true to the name of an amphibious bicycle, rather than water based alone.

Attaching the floats.

While I doubt it would be overly advantageous in a city with so many bridges like Pittsburgh, the recreation aspect would provide hours of fun on our three large waterways. I would be curious how deep the draft is, and what the performance is like on smaller streams; particularly going against the current.

Check out the rest of the pictures from ReflectionOf.Me.

The time has come, spring is here and to kick it all off, ClankWorks has decided to orchestrate a Tweed Ride in our fair town of Pittsburgh. We hope this will be a great chance to start what will hopefully become a yearly tradition.

As the poster shows, we will be starting in Doughboy Square, home to ClankWorks and the new home to BikePGH. From here, a brief ride through the strip, Allegheny West and Downtown will culminate in a brief jaunt in the South Side until we end at Piper’s Pub. The exact route can be viewed on Google Maps. We will begin milling about the square shortly after 2, but will have our door open earlier than that if you wish to swing by. Come out and show your support for good cycling, good friends and good times in tweed!
